SHOPPING IN EAST AFRICA

There are plenty of places to do your shopping right from the airports, major cities and towns, shopping centres, hotels and shopping malls.  In many cities and towns, you can get almost anything you need for your daily needs just like you would get London, New York or Paris, for example.  When visiting the the larger cities (Nairobi, Kampala, Mombasa and Dar es Salaam), do not miss special markets for African artefacts, curios and souvenirs. Most shopping centres and malls offer a variety of shopping options.  The largest shopping mall in East Africa is covered on our special feature below:

SPECIAL FEATURE

The Sarit Centre - "City Within a City!"

Opened in 1983 in Nairobi, The Sarit Centre was East Africa's first-ever shopping mall, and remains the biggest and busiest such complex in the East Africa.  It attracts up to 20,000 shoppers daily.  It is located in the up-market suburb of Westlands, only four kilometres from Nairobi's central business district, with space of about 700 vehicles in its own car parks.

Sarit's slogan, "City Within a City" encapsulates its objective, providing everything under one roof.  This includes a 50,000 square feet Uchumi Hyper-Market, 70 shops, boutiques and service outlets, two-screen cinema, health club, food court and restaurants, medical facilities and professional services e.g. tour and travel agents, souvenir shops, art, crafts and paintings shops.

A purpose-built 1,000 square metres international exhibition centre is incorporated into the complex, and a busy calendar of trade and consumer shows, cultural and community events is a major component of its marketing strategy.  For more about The Sarit Centre, click here.
